Busy Travel Weekend According To AAA

(DEARBORN) – Labor Day is traditionally a busy travel time around the United States.

And it looks like 2014 will be even more busy than recent years.

AAA Travel is projecting 34.7 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during this Labor Day holiday weekend. That's the highest volume for the holiday since 2008 and a 1.3 percent increase over 2013.

In Michigan, over 1.1 million people are expected to travel during the Labor Day holiday, a nearly 1 percent increase compared to last year. Of those, over one million people plan to travel by auto, while more than 43,000 will travel by air and over 79,000 will go by rail, bus or ship.

AAA also expects gas prices to have little impact on the number of people traveling for Labor Day, though lower prices could help make travel more affordable.

Susan Hiltz, Public Affairs Director for AAA Michigan, says the Labor Day holiday is traditionally the last hurrah for summer vacationing for Michigan. She says many people take advantage of the long weekend as the holiday falls just before the start of the new school year.

The 2014 Labor Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, August 28 to Monday, September 1.
